Phonics
Monster Phonics
At Holy Trinity we follow the Monster Phonics programme. Phonics now takes place first thing in the morning from 8:45-9:15 with all children from KS1 and identified children from KS2 working in small groups with targeted phonics tuition.
Staff have been trained in the new phonics scheme and are now confident with using Monster Phonics to plan and deliver sessions. Feedback from staff is positive with progression tracked and reduced workload.
Children have engaged very positively with the sessions and enjoy the colourful and interactive nature of the scheme.
Children have been assessed regularly and groups changed swiftly to meet their needs, resulting in rapid progression and targeted support where needed.
Children with SEND have the opportunity to work in small groups and are encouraged to participate in additional phonics sessions during the afternoons.
Children have access to e-books and read Monster Phonics books regularly as part of 1:1 and guided reading.
All children take home decodable books to read and these books are changed 3 times per week.
Volunteer readers come in weekly to hear targeted readers and children are always very enthusiastic to read.
Children have opportunities to apply their phonics knowledge not just during phonics sessions but throughout the day.
